How to Survive a Party as an Introvert

How to Survive a Party as an Introvert

If you’re an introvert like me, you may not love parties. So, here are five simple tips to surviving the get-togethers that are sure to await us this season:

5 Steps to Survive a Party as an Introvert.

1. Bring a friend. If you’re an introvert, you’re probably familiar with this faithful crutch.

2. Make a friend. If you can’t bring a friend, make a friend! Just because we’re introverts, doesn’t mean we are unable to socialize. Most of us simply prefer small groups, or better yet, one-on-one conversations. So find a fellow wallflower and figure out what they’re passionate about. Once you discover a shared interest to discuss—you’re golden!

3. Take a break! Do you ever feel drained from smiling, nodding, and listening? Don’t be afraid to take a break! Excuse yourself for the restroom, close the door, shut your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Sometimes that’s all you need. If it’s a more casual event, like a family gathering, go for a walk. If there’s an apparent need, like ice or napkins, offer to run to the store and pick it up—you’ll get a few minutes to yourself in the car while being helpful…which leads to my next tip!

It’s party season! If you’re an introvert, that word could make you nervous, but don’t fret, take these 5 tips and you’re sure to enjoy your next gathering!

4. Make yourself useful. Feeling awkward or antsy? Find a helpful way to serve others around you. If you arrive early, offer to set the table, distribute drinks, or ask if there’s anything else you can help with. If you’ve already enjoyed the meal, clear the table and wash the dishes. The outcome is nothing but positive: you serve your friends while getting a “social break.”

5. Relax! Hey, you’re at a party—have fun! If you’re feeling pressure, take a minute to recognize that you’re probably the only one putting it on yourself. Consider the fact that you were invited for a reason—people enjoy you…so just be yourself!
