Are You Grumpy or Just Neglecting Yourself?
I’m a moody person. I’ll admit that. But often, I feel grumpy, depressed, irritable or anxious. Are you grumpy too? Well, I find that the root cause of my negative mood is that I’ve actually been neglecting myself. Maybe you’re neglecting yourself too.
It’s so easy as a stay-at-home, work-at-home mom to get so caught up in changing diapers, wiping up spills, mixing bottles, meeting deadlines, making phone calls, and kissing booboos that I neglect to take care of myself. And that makes me grumpy.
Are You Neglecting Yourself? Here’s a Checklist to Find Out:
Have you eaten something healthy?
I tend to skip breakfast, and that leaves me feeling groggy and malnourished. Protein is super helpful when it comes to boosting my energy. Yogurt, eggs, raw almonds, oatmeal, or a slice of cheese are my favorite quick and easy healthy sources.
Did you drink enough water?
Being even a little dehydrated can severely impact my mood. I’m not just saying that; it’s a medical fact. Plus, it’s known to cause headaches and exacerbate PMS cramps. I don’t have time for that!
Have you showered?
Let’s just admit to ourselves that the 30-minute shower is a legend of yesteryear, and a 15-minute shower is a luxury. However, I’ve noticed a definite correlation between my mood and my hygiene. When I’m clean I feel prettier and happier.
How much did you sleep last night?
It’s not like us mommies can push the pause button on life and go take a nap (wouldn’t that be nice?), but at least acknowledging, “Oh that’s right, I tossed and turned all night,” or “I’m just tired because my 5-year-old kept waking up,” can help you cope with your misery.
Have you painted your nails lately?
Nothing cheers me up like a splash of color, and soaking my tootsies in hot water with scented oils and Epsom salts is so relaxing. (Read our DIY manicure piece if you need some help!)
How much coffee did you drink?
I’ve learned the hard way that my caffeine intake is a very delicate balance. Too little and I’m dragging. Too much and I’m anxious and impatient.
Have you exercised lately?
Whether we’re talking 20 minutes of refreshing yoga or heart-pounding cardio, I find that getting my blood flowing, loosening up stiff muscles and working kinks out of my joints and back renew me both physically and emotionally.
That’s my little list—I hope you find it helpful on those days when you’re feeling grumpy.
