I Wish Every Mom of a Special Needs Child Knew This

Dear mom of a special needs child,

I heard you first, across the sanctuary. Silly giggles, noisy stims, questions asked louder than a whisper. Without ever looking your way, I saw you. The energy it takes to get out of the door, to a new place, unable to control every aspect of the setting. Wrestling the thoughts of staying home rather than attending church because it would just be easier. You persisted.

As the congregation sang “Thy power throughout the universe displayed”, I held back tears, your voice served as a balm to my heart. Each word held more meaning coming from a place of trial rather than of sufficiency. Christ made perfect in your weakness, our worship enhanced.

With grace you nurtured your young one, who could not sit still in body or mind. So steadfast you were in your responses. You began to grow weary, I know it well, and have been there so many times. Worried about others, taking away from the service, letting them learn in the calm. Never realizing how enhanced it all was with you present.

Sister, a noisy sanctuary is a gift of grace when filled with the sounds of little ones. You are no bother. We don’t mind at all; in fact it encourages us. So, consider dear mama, coming in next week with tablet and toys galore. Making noise and leaving a mess, real life on display.

We see God’s true heart for his children, as you bring your little along. I know it’s hard fought. You motivate me to carry on. Thank you for all you are doing, for showing Christ’s love each day.

Sincerely,

Another mom of a special needs child
