Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is a Must Have!

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is a Must Have!

Today I’m looking at Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. These are amazing in about 1,000 different ways! This is a drugstore brand of the “beauty blender.” They can be used to apply make-up either dry or damp. I use these mainly for foundation, concealer, and setting powders. I bought mine on Amazon for $6.99, but you can find them at Target and Walmart too. The great thing about this particular sponge is the different edges it has to blend—creating a smooth, professional finish. It has a point that can get into smaller areas around the eye. The pointed side is also great for covering a small break out. The flat side of the sponge can be used to tap on foundation and powders, but it can also be used for contouring. These […]

Paring-Your-Wardrobe-When-You-Can’t-Commit-to-a-Capsule

Paring Your Wardrobe When You Can’t Commit to a Capsule

I’ve been reading about capsule wardrobes for a couple of years, and we’ve written about them before. You can find that article here. They intrigue me for a couple of reasons. First, they propose that the few pieces you own are high quality, and I’ve always been a TJ Maxx wear-it-and-toss-it kind of girl. Second, my heart is increasingly burdened for the extreme poor and suffering people in the world, so unnecessary consumerism is becoming less appealing. But…I love clothes! And jewelry. And trends. Gah! It’s an ongoing struggle, and up until now I’ve handled it by continually weeding my closet of a few pieces every couple of months and donating them. But while I was in Haiti recently, during a brief downtime

3 Big Do’s and Don’ts of Skin Care You Need to Start Now

3 Big Do’s and Don’ts of Skin Care You Need to Start Now

In the last six years of being a licensed Esthetician (which, just to clarify is not to be confused with a statistician or Obstetrician…yup, that’s happened), I have heard some pretty interesting skin care routine stories from clients. I’ve heard everything from clients washing their face with acetone, to using hand sanitizer on their face throughout the day, because they were convinced it would help with their acne (to which I then considered referring them to me for counseling services). All that to say, I thought it might be helpful to share 3 brief do’s and don’ts as it relates to the world of skin care, and some best and not-so-best practices. 1. DO: Always wash your face at night. If you were going

4-Unique-Shops-That-Rescue-and-Empower-Women

4 Unique Shops That Empower and Rescue Women

My shopping strategy has transitioned somewhat over the past couple of years since two things happened: I got connected to Instagram, and I stopped being afraid to order clothing or footwear online. Instagram has allowed me to find all kinds of handmade items and one-of-a-kind boutiques that I might never have otherwise stumbled upon. And my lessening fear about repackaging and returning apparel purchased on the computer has saved me lots of time and gas. Especially since many stores offer free shipping…and some of them, like Nordstrom, paid postage on returns! One thing I especially love to discover, whether in person or online, are stores that have a purpose—those whose profits are used to rescue women out of poverty, addiction, prostitution and

5-Reasons-Why-Sorel-Boots-Are-the-Perfect-Fall-Investment

5 Reasons Why Sorel Boots Are the Perfect Fall Investment

Have you ever bought something you loved so deeply that you instantly regretted not buying the 25 other colors it comes in? I definitely have—and I’m the crazy one who eventually owns all 25 colors, too. There’s no stopping me. Well, unless my husband intervenes and we have a come-to-Jesus moment. When I discovered the Sorel 1964 Premium Wedge Boots last fall, I knew I actually needed a pair—in three colors. I was tired of slipping and sliding on the ice in my Steve Madden boots (I fell flat on my face once—yeah, it hurt). Don’t get me wrong, Steve Madden boots have unsurpassable style and will probably outlive me—especially the Freebird brand, but the functionality of those boots don’t even come close to cutting

Now Trending Lace Bralettes—How To Style Them

Now Trending: Lace Bralettes—How To Style Them

The lace bralette has been on the rise for quite some time and has easily become one of the biggest latest trends. When it comes to styling, lace bralettes are worn underneath clothes, so that the straps complement a top or dress (my personal preference), or they are worn as a top itself, showcasing most of the chest part of the bralette through a low-cut or cutout shirt or dress. In regards to style, my top two picks are the racerback bralette and the halter bralette. Lace bralettes add a feminine, bohemian vibe to any ensemble—even a preppy look. Racerback bralettes look great when paired with sleeveless dresses, tops, and even sweaters that expose the upper back. With this style specifically, the beautiful lace detail of the racerback is subtly featured, but

How Running Became About More Than Fitness to Me

How Running Became About More Than Fitness to Me

Gripping many of the cities across our great country right now are the cold temperatures associated with winter. Though I may not feel it currently in my new home of Bonita Beach, Florida—where the average daily temperature for the past few months have fallen sublimely in the mid-80s—I am reminded of the 5 years I spent in Charlotte, North Carolina during my post-graduate life, starting out in the working world as a young professional. One of my favorite hobbies and ways to exercise was running. I had always been a sprinter when running before, so I challenged myself over the course of several years to build up some stamina, so that I could cover more distance and discover the city this way.

5-Easy-Ways-to-Maintain-Your-Health1

5 Easy Ways to Maintain Your Health

I am not a medical professional, but I have lived long enough to watch ladies, myself included, simply wear themselves out. We’re running and gunning, trying to get all things accomplished, and, as we do, we are almost always neglecting ourselves. Here are 5 things I’ve learned about protecting your health so that you can keep your forward movement, well, moving forward. 1. Eliminate Stress. And you say, “Yeah right, like that’s gonna happen.” You can’t relieve all stressors, but ladies, if we are honest we can relieve the unnecessary ones. You do not have to do everything for everyone with perfection as your goal. Choose the best things, based on your priorities, and give yourself a break. 2. Quit Dieting. I’m not saying we won’t ever find ourselves in a season of life when we need

This glorious gadget is available at all different price ranges, but I recommend looking at HomeGoods for an affordable tabletop one that holds the veggies while you turn the handle. The Veggetti Pro is a great option, priced at

Not sure why, but we are often the last person who we want to let off the hook. The-Best-Foundation-Out-of-364-Formulas

The Best Foundation (Out of 364 Formulas!)

For the most part, I’d consider myself a girly-girl. I like to dress up, wear makeup, paint my nails, etc. However, spending a lot of time and money on makeup has just never been my thing. I usually find something from the drugstore or Ulta that is reasonably priced and stick with it. In college, I had a roommate who adored makeup. Amber loved to go to Sephora and get samples, have them color-match her, and so on and so forth. One time she made me go with her and get color swatched by one of their professionals in black…I was slightly shocked by what a difference it made. For the first time in my life, I spent more than $12 on foundation

The-Best-Style-Advice-I-Ever-Received

The Best Style Advice I Ever Received

As women we tend to pay at least some (or a lot) of attention to our wardrobes and personal style. Certain details and pieces catch our eye repeatedly, no matter how cluttered the store, and we know the specific clothing items that we would wear every day if we could. With endless options of constantly changing trends, styles, and price points, it can be difficult to build a wardrobe of pieces that are true to who we are, one that includes a careful mix of trendy and timeless while optimizing our needs (professional, comfortable, lifestyle, high fashion, etc.). As one who appreciates the art of fashion and can wander through a whole mall, I tend to love many styles and feel the

Grasping for Control? A Counselor Explains How to Stop

Grasping for Control? A Counselor Explains How to Stop

At one time or another I’m sure we’ve all found ourselves to be the dreaded backseat driver—wincing with each turn and offering unsolicited advice about the speed limit or the direction that the (clearly incapable) driver was taking you. Or how about that team work project you were assigned to? You weren’t so confident in your co-workers abilities so you decided to just do the whole thing yourself. You tell yourself: “I’ve seen them in work meetings dozing off, or scrolling mindlessly through their Instagram feed, so I’m not about to get passed up on that promotion just because I’m forced to work on team loser.” Or maybe you’re the mom of four, and your husband never makes the lunches right, so instead of accepting his much needed help, you relieve him of his lunch
